Good afternoon! Welcome to Caddyshanks. If you don’t mind, could you fill out this survey? It takes about two minutes, and it will help us to make sure we are serving you up with the kind of content you enjoy most.
Also, if you fill it out, you will automatically be entered into a drawing to win a FREE PUTTER. We only expect a few hundred responses, so your chances of getting the free putter should be pretty decent.
Here's what we've got for ya today:
🚩 Location: Vidanta Vallarta, Mexico
💰 Purse: $8.1M -$1.4M to first.
👑 Previous Winner: Tony Finau
👀 Watch On: Golf Channel, NBC, ESPN+
Do you believe in the Golf Gods?
If so, then by all laws of nature and golf, Tony Finau may have cursed himself this week.
While speaking to the media, he said “I do feel like I’m prime to go on a run starting this week”.
Famous last words my man, famous last words. Even if you are defending champ.
With that being said, the field for the Mexico Open is the weakest field of the year so far, with only 3 of the top 50 in OWGR represented. So, Tony doesn’t have a lot of competition at the high end of the board.
Oh, and speaking of OWGR - is it dead? More on that below.
This week, we want guys who can bang it off the tee, but who are also top in the field in long iron play. The average approach shot here is 190 yards. It’s a bombers paradise.
Best In The Field
Tony Finau, Nicolai Højgaard, Emiliano Grillo, Stephen Jaeger, Keith Mitchell, Taylor Pendrith, Thomas Detry, Davis Thompson, and Erik Van Rooyen.
Further Reading: Finau sees one court case dismissed, another set for trial.
2021 - Jon Rahm
2022 - Jon Rahm
2023 - Tony Finau
Last week, we hit Hideki with our pre-tourney pick, and a community member hit for $23,000. So, no pressure to make good picks this week, right?…right?
All odds via BetMGM. Except the MTCP, which is available on Fanduel.
Winner: Nicolai Højgaard +1800
You know we rarely pick a short odds guy, but these fields are so wide open it can be really tough to choose. We are going with what feels like a safe pick here. He can thrive in a bombers paradise, which is exactly what Vidanta Vallarta is.
Top Five: Ryo Hisatsune +750
Ryo is a 21 year old golfer out of Japan who’s been making waves lately. He averages about 304 OTT.
Top Ten: Brandon Wu +320
This is a course history pick. He’s gained strokes in his last 8 rounds at this event.
Top Twenty: Jake Knapp +175
Jake went from bar bouncer to favorite to win PGAT rookie of the year honors. He finished T3 at the Farmers Insurance Open and T28 at the WM Open.
Longshot: Cam Champ +4500
Okay, +4500 isn’t as long as we typically go here, but we feel like it’s Cam Champs time to break out and he absolutely rips it off the tee. He’s gained strokes OTT in 4/4 starts this year.
Make The Cut Parlay (Fanduel): Grillo, Hisatsune, and Wu to all make the cut. +156

This was a good read from Sean Zak at Golf Mag.
The parallels between pro lacrosse and pro golf run pretty deep.
So, what does it mean for the future? What does a player run tour look like? What can lacrosse tell us about the future of golf?

This week, Greg Norman put the OWGR, or Official World Golf Rankings, on blast. He called the rankings “laughable”.
OWGR has been an issue for LIV since the start, because the OWGR says they have no way to accurately assess the breakaway league, which competes in a limited number of no-cut events, with small fields.
This creates a major issue: LIV golfers need OWGR points to qualify for majors.
Some fans say “Well, too bad fellas. You knew this when you took your big Saudi oil money check”.
Other fans say “We just want to see the best golfers in the world compete against each other and you can’t tell me DJ, Bryson, and Cam Smith aren’t on the short list of best golfers in the world.
Shanks Says: Both points are true at the same time, but at a certain point, maybe the focus should be on rewarding golf fans and giving us what we want.
