Preview & Picks: The Memorial Tournament

The PGA Tour is headed to Jack’s Place this week: Muirfield Village.

This is the 50th version of The Memorial Tournament and this year they’ll be honoring Jack’s wife, Barbara. Jack was extremely emotional when making the announcement.

It’s a signature event (strong field, big purse) and pretty much all of the top golfers on Tour will be present, with the exception of Rory McIlroy, who is skipping the tournament for the first time since 2017.

Because Jack does things the right way, there is a cut this week after 36 holes.

Last year, it played as the toughest non-major event on Tour and we expect that to continue, but some rain earlier in the week is expected to soften up the course some.

We will leave you with this: the biggest names tend to win at Jack’s Place, like Tiger, Scottie, Rory, or Viktor Hovland, but don’t forget that lesser known guys like William McGirt & Bart Bryant have also won here when no one expected them to.

Shanks Picks

The last two weeks have been ice cold. This is the week that changes.

Winner: Scottie Scheffler +280. Same thing as last week. Yeah, it’s boring to pick the favorite, but we just can’t convince ourselves to bet against Scottie. He’s too good.

Winner: Sepp Straka +4500. Last time Sepp had odds this long, it made us raise our eyebrows and we picked him. We got burned there. Vegas always knows best, but maybe this time it’ll be different, right?

Winner: Denny McCarthy +5000. He’s going to win a big tournament sooner or later. He simply putts too well to not be a winner. He’s had some high finishes at Muirfield - a playoff runner-up in 2023 and T5 in 2022. He also just finished 8th at the PGA Championship.

Top Twenty: Rickie Fowler +160. A fools errand? Maybe, but since there’s been a lot of criticism about him and Spieth receiving sponsors invites, we are gonna take a flier on Rick. He was T15 at the Truist Championship and T16 last week at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Top Twenty: Christiaan Bezuidenhout +210 He finished T4 at The Memorial Tournament last year. Just don’t ask us how to pronounce his name.

Top Twenty: Bud Cauley +220. This is the storyline of the week pick. It was in Ohio, the week of The Memorial, that he got into the car accident that almost ruined his career. Maybe the golf gods will smile upon us all. (BetMGM)
