Cam Young Wins Players

Plus: Chasing Sunday, Cam Young OTT Drill, and More.

Good Afternoon. It’s always nice to pick a winner.

Cam Young’s win yesterday was our third outright winner of the season so far. We picked Scottie Scheffler at The American Express, Chris Gotterup at WM Phoenix Open, and now Cameron Young at The Players Championship.

For another week, we get to claim we’re the only golf newsletter that pays you to read it.

This looks good. It seems Brian Rolapp is bringing some NFL Studios production to the PGA TOUR. Smart.

A Major By Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet

Call it whatever you want - yesterday was a great golf tournament.

The ascendant Ludvig Åberg, who seemed destined for a breakout moment, finally made a mistake (okay, a few) at a course designed to punish even the smallest ones. His round unraveled on the back nine.

Åberg shot 40 coming in and 76 on the day, watching his three-shot lead disappear.

With Åberg stumbling, the focus of the tournament shifted to the group ahead of him - Cameron Young and Matt Fitzpatrick. And it felt like a slugfest.

Both players put on a clinic in ball striking. Fitzpatrick birdied the 12th and 13th holes to take a one-shot lead, and he carried it with him to the tee box at the iconic 17th at TPC Sawgrass.

Cameron Young would go on to make the birdie putt, and as he walked to the 18th tee the crowd serenaded him with chants of “USA! USA!” with the lead tied.

With the pressure on, Young stepped up on 18 at TPC Sawgrass and unleashed an absolute bomb. The drive traveled 375 yards - the longest ever recorded on the 18th hole at Sawgrass. Meanwhile, Matt Fitzpatrick drove it through the fairway.

Young had a birdie putt to win, but it slid by. Fitzpatrick then had a par putt to force a playoff - and missed.

Young tapped in for par and the 2026 The Players Championship trophy.

A Note On The Crowds

For the second week in a row, people in the crowd were trying to affect the final two golfers as they attempted to win a tournament. It happens, but there’s a line that should be respected:

It’s fine to support your guy, but you don’t need to actively try to sabotage his opponent.

Fortunately, Matt Fitzpatrick handled both the crowd, and his loss, with a touch of class and humor, and that deserves acknowledgement.

"That was literally child's play compared to Bethpage. If they think that that was anything, then they need to reassess. Get yourself up to New York."
