Quick Recap: Beatdown At Bethpage

Well, that was rough to watch.

Pretty much from the moment the Ryder Cup started on Friday, the whole vibe was off - and while the U.S. team showed some signs of life during Sunday Singles, it was too little too late.

Some parting thoughts after another Ryder Cup loss:

  1. The viewing experience on day one was god awful. The commercial load was ridiculous, the coverage missed important shots and putts, and the PGA of America hired some 3rd rate comedian to rally the crowd on the first tee, who ended up stepping down from her position after receiving heavy criticism for leading a “F*ck Rory!” chant. But who hired this clown to begin with? Incompetent leadership from the PGA of America did.

  2. Their decisions lead directly to an underwhelming product and an embarrassing result. Between ticket prices being astronomical, the corniness of the production, and the commercials, it feels obvious that the PGA cares far more about money than they do about winning. That’s probably why they threatened us with a C&D for giving away tickets to their grossly overpriced event.

  3. Of course, the team and it’s captain didn’t fair much better in their endeavors. Scottie Scheffler started 0-4-0, for some odd reason Keegan Bradley put the worst possible pairing out there (twice) in Morikawa & English, and the course set-up (birdie-fest) didn’t play to the Americans strengths at all. With the American team giving their fans little to cheer for, the patrons in red, white, and blue turned their attention to cheering against the Europeans instead of for their team. Just baffling and disappointing stuff all around.

  4. If there’s anything that’s become painfully obvious after all of this, it’s that the rumors are true - the European team simply cares more. That’s evident in both their approach and the results. The Europeans have a dedicated staff who solely focuses on winning the Ryder Cup, analytical decision making for setups and pairings, and other small details like changing the beds the players slept in so they’d be well rested. For Europe, the Ryder Cup is about more than money. It’s about history, pride, and the joy that comes being a small piece of a greater whole, not just a bunch of individuals who are essentially a team in name only.

  5. The results? Europe has won 9 of the last 12 Ryder Cups, including two road victories. Meanwhile, the USA is left with nothing but questions that don’t have easy answers. Is there anyone on the American side that cares about the Ryder Cup as much as the Europeans do? Who will be our next captain? What will it take to get out of this rut?
