Plus: Should the PGA Championship move back to August?

Good Afternoon. Rory McIlroy said this week that while he doesn’t believe the Players Championship should be viewed as a major, he does believe it has more of an identity than the PGA Championship. When asked what he thought the PGA Championship could do to increase its aura, he said “Glory’s last shot. I think it needs to go back to August.”

Do you agree?

Preview & Picks: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The week after the Super Bowl always feels like the biggest sports hangover of the year. There’s no more football to watch, the NBA regular season is bad product, plus baseball and March Madness are weeks away.

Fortunately, for golf fans, we get a treat this week.

That treat comes in the form of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which is held at - you guessed it - the iconic Pebble Beach.

Well, three of the four rounds are there at least - the first 36 holes this year will be split between Pebble and Spyglass Hill. After that, they lose the amateurs and play the final two rounds at Pebble.

It also happens to be a signature event, which means a strong, but limited field.

Scottie Scheffler is competing, so therefor he’s the betting favorite.

Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood will be making their PGA TOUR season debuts this week.

In all, 27 of the top 30 players in OWGR are in the field.

Field Notes

  • Pebble Beach has some of the smallest greens on TOUR

  • Par 5 Scoring matters, Rory won last year with two eagles on Sunday.

  • More than half of the approach shots come from inside 150 yards

Neither course is particularly long, as far as TOUR standards go, so you want to target players who’ve got their wedge game dialed in.

Weekly Bets: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

We’ve partnered with Keith Stewart at Read The Line to share his weekly golf betting picks with the Caddyshanks crew. If you’re the type who enjoys breaking down matchups, spotting trends, and hunting for value, you’ll feel right at home in the RTL community. Join Here.

Keith Stewart’s Picks

Russell Henley (+3000 DraftKings)

If you were to build an archetype player for Pebble Beach, it would be Russell Henley. Henley is one of the top wedge players in the field and can handle the elements. Russell finished fifth here last year and specializes in short coastal golf courses on TOUR. With a signature series win under his belt (API), I’m not worried about “Signature Sundays.” In two starts this season, Henley has not finished outside the top 19. Did I happen to mention Russell is an excellent sand player? That will help with 116 bunkers scattered across Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Pierceson Coody (+6600 Bet Rivers)

Pierceson Coody is the number one-ranked Poa Annua putter in the field. In four starts this season, Coody has finished T13, T18, T2, and T10. Pierceson’s runner-up finish took place at Torrey Pines. He’s taking that exemplary ball striking back to a Pacific Poa course! Forget the desert, he cannot wait to get back on these greens. It will take a special effort to beat Scheffler, but the way Pierceson is playing, anything can happen.

Caddyshanks Picks

Viktor Hovland (+2700 Fanduel)

First, let me just say that I fully back Keith with his Russell Henley pick this week, as he is a perfect course fit. I’m going to go with the young Norwegian. Vik is also a great course fit and his recent form is pretty good. He struggled some with the driver in Arizona, but was firing at the flagstick all weekend.

Hideki Matsuyama (+3300 Fanduel)

Sometimes, it gets a little boring picking the same people every week, and it seems a lot of people expect Hideki to have a hangover from his tough loss at the WM Open. I think, with his recent form and course fit, you can’t ignore him at this number - he’s playing great golf right now.

Scottie Scheffler (+300 Fanduel)

We all got to witness a rare, over-par round from Scottie last Thursday, but then he proceeded to make just one bogey over the final 54 holes. He remains an auto-bet until further notice.
