Is LIV Golf Cooked?

Happy Bryson Dechambeau GIF by LIV Golf

This is just the opinion of one guy who writes a golf newsletter a few times per week, but LIV might be cooked.

To start the year, they lost Brooks Koepka, and there’s a decent chance that the PGA TOUR reinstates him this season. He was one of their first major signings, one of two LIV Players to win a major since LIV’s start, and now he’s gone.

It could have a ripple effect on the league.

In a statement to Flushing It about a month ago, Bryson DeChambeau said “I could just do YouTube golf and be totally fine as well.” and he’s 100% right.

He probably makes millions every year from YouTube alone.

Jon Rahm is still with LIV, for now, but since leaving the TOUR his performances in majors haven’t been that good. This was a guy who seemed like he’d win 10 majors at one point, now he seems to be fading away in relative obscurity like Dustin Johnson.

It’s a shame, because these guys are incredible talents, but we’re quickly losing the ability to measure them against the best of all time and that matters.

Of course, they also still have Phil Mickelson, but he’s 55 years old and his best golfing days are well behind him.

In summary, they’ve lost one of their biggest signings, their superstar is now on the fence about his future, and the guys they still have aren’t playing their best golf. Remember Cam Smith?

Even if none of the above were true, they are still competing on a Tour that has a quirky team format, a weak talent pipeline, no history, and questionable ownership.

It seems that, as these things begin to pile up, it may become too difficult for LIV to overcome, especially without headliners.

Yesterday, Akshay Bhatia, a rising PGA TOUR star, reportedly turned down a lucrative offer from LIV and instead signed with Tiger Woods TGL Team.

LIV has signed four golfers this offseason; Laurie Canter, Victor Perez, Elvis Smylie, and Thomas Detry.

Those are good players, but I can promise you that the average golf fan doesn’t have a clue who they are and they will deliver no new eyeballs for the league. In today’s world, eyeballs are the only thing that matters.

So yeah, LIV might be cooked.
