Comeback Kim

No, that's not a Kardashian joke.

Good Afternoon. Took a little risk with today’s subject line, but these opportunities only present themselves so often. For those who didn’t get the reference, it’s from Parks & Rec. Everyone loves a good comeback story.

Quick Recaps: LIV Golf & PGA TOUR

Comeback Kim

A few years ago, when LIV signed golf’s version of Sasquatch, Anthony Kim, it was a feel good story about a guy getting a second chance.

The idea of a comeback and a return to prominence captured the golf world’s attention. After all, Kim was a well-liked star who disappeared for 12 years in the middle of his prime, battling injuries, addiction, and mental health issues.

But now he was back. What if he still had it?

It’s the kind of storyline only sports can sell.

Then reality showed up.

Anthony Kim looked like a shell of himself. He could get around the course, but that was about it. He earned zero points in his first two LIV seasons and was eventually relegated.

The dream was over.

Even after grinding his way back onto LIV with a third-place finish on the Asian Tour, few believed he could compete at a meaningful level again.

Then came Riyadh - a sneaky 22nd-place finish, his best result on LIV.

This past weekend, he entered the final round five shots behind two of the best players on the planet, Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau.

And then he simply outplayed them.

He won by three strokes in front of a massive Australian crowd, with his wife and daughter by his side.

His first professional win in nearly 16 years.

Comeback complete.

Morikawa Wins at Pebble Beach

Another drought ended on Sunday - this one belonging to Collin Morikawa.

He didn’t wait 16 years like Anthony Kim. His winless stretch only dated back to 2023… plus an extra 45-minute delay on the par-5 18th fairway while he stood there needing birdie to win.

The delay? Jacob Bridgeman got stuck on the beach. For a while. Then hit one from the sand into the ocean. Then battled wind so strong he couldn’t get his ball to stay still on the green. It was brutal.

It’s not the PGA Tour’s fault - they can’t control the weather - but they’ve got to figure out a better protocol for moments like that. It completely sucked the air out of the finish and made Morikawa’s win feel oddly uneventful.

Eventually, after the long wait, Morikawa got up and down from just off the green for birdie and the victory.

In his post-tournament interview, he shared that he and his wife are expecting. A big congrats to their family.

Big weekend for dads and golf.
