⛳️ The PGA Tour Has Problems

Plus: Golf Gal Of The Week, Flop It Like It's Hot, & More Golf News.

Good afternoon. The Superbowl match between the Philadelphia Eagles & The Kansas City Chiefs is set for February 9th, the same weekend as the WM Open. Which will be more rowdy? The Eagles fans descending upon New Orleans, or the crowds at the Waste Management? It’s a real toss up.

Quick Recap: The Farmers

Harris English has had a couple of close calls at Torrey Pines but was never able to get over the hump. He lost in a playoff to Jason Day in 2015 and finished third at the ‘21 US Open behind eventual winner Jon Rahm and runner-up Louis Oosthuizen—both now competing on rival LIV Golf.

That changed on Saturday.

English was as steady as ever down the stretch, overcoming early bogeys to hold on for a one-shot victory over Sam Stevens. It marked his fifth career win on the PGA Tour and his first since 2021.

For those who bet on him pre-tournament at 100-1 odds, it was a big payoff. The seasoned veteran, known as one of the most well-liked players on tour, was visibly emotional as he celebrated the win with his family.

Yet, even with moments like these, the PGA Tour has a lingering problem.

Dottie Pepper addressed one of these issues during the broadcast, pointing out concerns with the pace of play, and she didn’t hold back:

“You know, Frank, I think we're starting to need a new word to talk about this pace of play issue, and it's respect. For your fellow competitors, for the fans, for broadcasts, for all of it. It's just gotta get better.”

The pace of play is just one of several challenges. The PGA Tour has also been grappling with talent losses to LIV Golf, heavy ad loads, and declining viewership.

To make matters worse, the top YouTube golf creators now regularly outpace the PGA Tour in weekly video views. The way people consume content has changed, and the Tour needs to adapt before it’s too late.
