Preview & Picks: Fedex St. Jude Championship

The playoffs have arrived and the Top 70 golfers in the world will all be there.
Well, 69 of the top 70, at least.
I think it’s pretty lame for one of the world’s best golfers and faces of the TOUR to skip out on their season-ending event.
However, the reality is that he could skip the next two weeks and just show up to East Lake if he wanted to, because he’s already qualified via the points system.
That’s the rub with the continued evolution of the Fedex Cup Playoffs, or as Jason Sobel said in his piece this morning, the PGA Tour can’t get it right because they have to serve too many masters.
Each decision they make has second order effects that someone will find fault with.
They have to attempt to reward the players for having a quality season, they need to appease the sponsors, and at the same time they have to make the fans happy.
Fans were happy, by the way, with the decision a few months ago to remove the “starting strokes” format, but without them, players like Rory McIlroy can no-show because they are already qualified. Double edged sword, I guess.
Of course, Scottie Scheffler could do the same thing as Rory, but he’s there and ready to compete alongside a loaded field.
After this week, the field will be whittled down to the Top 50 for the BMW Championship, and then East Lake will feature just the Top 30.
There’s a handful of TOUR favorites right around that Top 50 number already, like Jordan Spieth, Wyndham Clark, and Tony Finau.

Shanks Picks

Strokes Gained: APP is the key stat this week. All about ball-striking baby!
Winner: Scottie Scheffler +280: Nobody strikes the ball better than Scottie and it’s just too difficult to bet against him. It is funny to note, however, that Fanduel has started offering “winner without Scottie Scheffler” options.
Winner: Viktor Hovland +3500: Vik is a great ball striker, his recent form is solid, and he won at Innisbrook earlier this year which is a ball-strikers course as well.
Winner: Chris Gotterup +4500: Riding the hot hand with Gotterup, who has added motivation this year to try to secure a Ryder Cup spot.
Top Twenty: Jordan Spieth +115: We haven’t bet Spieth much this year, but he needs a strong finish to the season and we like him in this spot.
Top Twenty: Wyndham Clark +135: Wyndham has had an up & down season, but he seems to be rounding into form lately.
Top Twenty: Rickie Fowler +170: Rickie needs to finish T-17 or better to move on to the next leg of the playoffs.
